Hodgson Sealants’ 0311 butyl rubber sealant tape was specified for the installation of 78 solar panels on the roof of a new 350 pupil Integrated Special school/primary school in Farnworth. ‘The Orchards’ at Cherry Tree incorporates roof-mounted electricity-generating solar panels as a crucial part of its state-of-the-art energy efficient design. The photovoltaic solar panel installation was designed by Energi Holdings plc. Technical Director, Roger Dickinson, says: “Energy efficiency was a fundamental design element of this project. 78 162W PV panels were mounted on a south facing slope of the roof, on aluminium rails with stainless steel brackets.
“The roof construction is a twinskin insulated construction, and the outer roof panels had to be pierced so that the mounting rails could be fastened to the purlins. To ensure the roof remained weathertight over the lifetime of the building, Kingspan recommended Hodgson’s butyl sealant.
“The Hodgson butyl sealant tape was easy to apply to the stainless steel brackets and it provided instant tack for the brackets to the sloping roof. This allowed two-handed driving of the fastener, making installation simple and rapid. In addition, we have used the Hodgsons butyl tape to seal the polypipe pipe sealing flange to the roof, and maintain a weather-tight seal.”
